Important update regarding mail service to Japan

March 17, 2011 - Postal service in Japan is available and deliveries are being made to areas affected by the earthquake and tsunami. Although there are still delivery problems in some areas (see below), Japan Post Service is making every effort to deliver items to addressees. For example, postal staff are going to evacuation centres to look for addressees and deliver the items directly to them. Items that cannot be delivered will be returned to sender.

Affected areas:

  • Along the Pacific Ocean coast and neighbouring inland areas of Aomori, Iwate, Miyagi, Fukushima and Ibaraki prefectures. (Note: Efforts are still under way to identify the precise areas affected.)
  • Parts of areas with postal codes beginning with the following two numbers: 02, 03, 30, 31, 96, 97 and 98
  • Parts of areas where people have been instructed to evacuate or take shelter following the accident at the Fukushima nuclear power plant (within 30 km of the affected reactors).
  • Parts of areas with postal codes beginning with the following two numbers: 96 and 97.

Due to the circumstances, Canada Post has suspended the on-time delivery guarantee for Xpresspost™ - International and Priority™ Worldwide items mailed to Japan on or after March 14, 2011.
