Canada Post delivers over 900 million pieces of mail in December

Dedication and teamwork by Canada Post employees helped the corporation to deliver over 900 million pieces of mail last December. Mother nature cooperated by providing good weather conditions in Central and Eastern Canada but never before seen weather conditions in Western Canada proved to be a challenge.

"Avalanches, floods, freezing rain, extremely high winds and power outages made things difficult on the west coast", said George Corcoran, General Manager, Operations Design and Performance, Canada Post. "By adding extra air, rail & highway transportation we were able to deliver wishes and parcels to loved ones, right up to and including Christmas eve."

Though the overall holiday period mail volumes were down by approximately 1% compared to last year, in the week leading upto Christmas (December 17-23, 2006), Canada Post handled 225 million pieces of mail compared to 217 million pieces in 2005.

Additional airline charters were added to ensure the delivery of holiday mail volumes. The regular 150 highway tractor-trailer services ran at capacity and an additional 100 trucks were engaged for the month of December. Additional services were added on an as needed basis. Canada Post also moved some 100 tractor-trailer loads of mail per week by train during the busy holiday period.
