Lord Baden-Powell makes his way onto a Commemorative Envelope celebrating L'Association des scouts du Canada
July 30, 2007
The spirit of scouting is deeply woven into the fabric of Canadian society with more than 78,000 young and old from coast-to-coast-to-coast enjoying scouting programs. All of the essential aspects of scouting in Canada are interwoven in l'ASC and Scouts Canada, which together form the backbone of scouting in Canada.
The ASC, a French-language based association, is a member of the World Organization of the Scout Movement (WOSM) as is Scouts Canada. Both organizations attend WOSM annual meetings making Canada the only country to be represented by two organizations. There are more than 28 million scouts worldwide.
To celebrate the founding of the scouting movement and to showcase Canadian diversity within the Scout movement, Canada Post is issuing a commemorative envelope featuring L'Association des scouts du Canada designed by Katie Deering, Canada Post's Graphic Design Group.
"I wanted the commemorative envelope to reflect an image of scouting right from the ground up; and so, marshmallows roasting over a campfire couldn't be more perfect." An image of Robert Baden-Powell, founder of the world scout movement and chief scout of the world, was used to create the Picture Postage™ stamp that's pre-printed on the envelope and as Deering says "Baden-Powell was a scout to the very end." The final touch to the commemorative envelope is a cancellation that was created from the ASC's crest. The back of the envelope incorporates badges that represent the various divisions that make up the ASC.
Lowe-Martin will print 15,000 commemorative envelopes.
More information on this commemorative envelope is available in the Newsroom section of the Canada Post Web site; a high-resolution photo is available in the Photo Centre of the Newsroom. The commemmorative envelope will be available at participating post offices, online following the links on the Canada Post Web site (www.canadapost.ca) or by mail from the National Philatelic Centre.
