CUPW members ratify two-year renewal agreements

September 08, 2021

2021/09/08

An important message from Susan Margles, Chief People and Safety Officer

I am pleased to tell you that members of the Canadian Union of Postal Workers (CUPW) voted to ratify the tentative two-year renewal agreements for both CUPW-Urban and CUPW-RSMC.

The new agreements will be in effect until December 31, 2023 (RSMC) and until January 31, 2024 (Urban). This means the next round of bargaining will not occur until 2023. This provides employees, customers and Canadians with certainty as the country builds back from COVID-19. It will also help us to establish and potentially expand our new financial service in retail post offices.

We are pleased that CUPW’s membership agreed to the renewal of the existing agreements.

The agreements include important improvements and commitments from Canada Post. Some highlights include:

  • Wage increases: On the first day of each year of the agreements, members will receive a 2% increase in wages, activity values, and variable activities. In the first year, there will be a $500 one-time non-pensionable lump sum payment to all full-time Urban employees and all RSMCs with six or more daily RMS hours. All other employees (including temporaries, PREs and OCREs) will receive $250.
  • Improved job security: For Urban workers, the dates in the job security clauses will be moved forward by more than one year. All workers who obtained regular positions between June 1, 2020, and the date of ratification of the renewal will have full job security as of the signing of the agreement.
  • No rollbacks: There are no rollbacks in either agreement.
  • Agreement to transition RSMCs to an hourly rate: Agreement to transition RSMCs to an hourly rate of pay system, conditional upon the development of an updated approach to RSMC’s workload and work content measurement.  The parties will form a committee to undertake a review of collective agreement provisions that require amendment, in order to make these changes. The committee shall meet within 60 days of the signing of this MOA.
  • Personal contact items (PCIs) for RSMCs: Effective on the date the agreement is signed, there will be no retroactive recovery of overpayments related to the annualized total of Personal Contact Items delivered.
  • No compulsory overtime: The clause (15.14) in the Urban agreement that provides for compulsory overtime on other routes will remain suspended until January 1, 2024.

More information will be provided to team leaders in Operations and employees represented by CUPW in the coming days.
