Ottawa (Ont.) – With Christmas eve still 15 days away, Canada Post is hitting many delivery milestones earlier than ever, including peak processing today with more than 34 million pieces of mail – letters, cards and, more than ever, parcels – being sorted in plants across the country.
Online shopping plays a more prevalent role this holiday season than ever before and Canada Post – the Canadian leader in business-to-consumer parcel delivery – is reporting a 20-per-cent increase in domestic parcel volumes since the third week of November compared to the same time last year.
More than one million parcels delivered in a single day: a hat trick!
Last year, for the first time in its history, Canada Post delivered a million parcels in a single day on two occasions – December 10 and December 17. This year, the million-parcel milestone has already been reached three times – on November 12, November 25 and on Cyber Monday, December 2. Today, Canada Post will again reach that parcel-delivery milestone as it delivers more than a million parcels across the country; additional million-parcel days are expected during the holiday season.
Since November 16, Canada Post has delivered parcels on the weekends and, so far, more than 400,000 parcels have been delivered on Saturdays and Sundays. Higher volumes are expected in the next few weeks.
Over the past year, parcel volumes from Canada Post’s largest e-commerce customers have increased by 17 per cent across Canada, with Quebec experiencing the largest jump, at 24 per cent, followed by Newfoundland and Labrador, at 20 per cent and Ontario and Nunavut, at 19 per cent. Prince Edward Island and Manitoba each showed an 11-per-cent increase.
Canadians go mobile to track parcel delivery
So far this year, Canadians have tracked their items online more than 81 million times using Canada Post’s digital platforms – up nearly 40 per cent from last year. Using their smartphones and tablets, Canadians will check their items 5.5 times before delivery.
