How to know if a Canada Post money order is real or counterfeit

You can spot a fake Canada Post money order by checking these security features:

  • Watermark

One or two beaver-shaped watermarks appear when held up to the light.

  • Micro printing

Horizontal lines at the bottom of the front read:
    CPCSCPCPC... or CANADAPOST/POSTESCANADA/CANADAPOST...

  • 1-800 phone number

1-800-563-0444 is the only number used to verify validity. Fraudsters may use a different number and provide false codes.

  • Fluorescent fibres

Writing on the back is visible under ultraviolet light.

  • Maximum amount

The value is capped at $999.99 CAD.

  • Altered dollar value

Look for signs that the amount has been changed (such as $8.00 altered to $800.00).

    • Check for ink smudges, font differences or other numbers showing through.
    • Verify the barcode matches the serial number at the top right of the money order (counterfeits won’t match).
