Why do I have to provide the sender and payee information for my money order?

To buy a postal money order, you must provide both the sender (person or business) and payee (person or business) information. This is required by the Proceeds of Crime (Money Laundering) and Terrorist Financing Act.

For money order transactions totalling $3,000 or more, you must also provide information about the conductor. This means that if you’re making the transaction on behalf of someone else or a business, you’ll need to provide your own information.

These requirements protect your money order. Only the designated payee, whose name is on the money order, can cash it.

A money order cannot be issued without the sender or payee names. Without this information, the transaction cannot be completed.
