OTTAWA Canada Post is modernizing to strengthen the postal service, power today’s ecommerce economy and meet the evolving needs of Canadians, businesses and communities across the country.

Community mailbox conversions are a key part of this plan. Canada Post plans to convert approximately four million addresses from door-to-door delivery to community mailboxes, with different areas transitioning each year.

Five additional communities have now been identified for conversion from door-to-door delivery to community mailboxes in 2027.

The conversions will affect approximately 65,000 addresses in Cornwall and South Stormont, Ont.; Regina and Saskatoon, Sask.; and Prince Rupert, B.C.

This brings the total number of addresses identified for conversion in late 2026 or 2027 to approximately 686,000 in 55 communities. In October, addresses in Sept-Îles, Que., and Winnipeg, Man., will be the first to officially transition from door-to-door to community mailbox delivery. Addresses in Etobicoke, Ont., and in Moncton and Riverview, N.B., will follow in November.

Canada Post engages with municipal officials and other local stakeholders to identify suitable locations for community mailboxes. Residents are notified in advance and kept informed throughout the conversion process.

The move to community mailboxes

Community mailboxes help keep mail and parcels safe and secure under lock and key. The majority of parcels delivered by Canada Post fit into either a community mailbox’s individual compartment or a dedicated parcel compartment, helping keep them secure until they are retrieved.

Nearly three quarters of Canadian addresses already receive mail through some form of secure, centralized delivery, such as community mailboxes, apartment lobby boxes and post office boxes. Centralized delivery is also more cost-efficient than delivery to the door.

Ensuring everyone can access their mail

Canada Post’s Delivery Accommodation Program provides free support to help residential customers with functional limitations access their mail and parcels. More than 18,000 households across the country currently benefit from some form of accommodation.

The program offers accommodations that make community mailboxes easier to use, such as sliding trays, Braille features or a more accessible compartment. In some cases, weekly home delivery may be provided on a seasonal, temporary or permanent basis.

Our commitment to Canadians

Canada Post is committed to moving forward in a thoughtful way that prioritizes service for all Canadians. It is also committed to treating employees with respect.

We will continue to update Canadians, customers, employees, bargaining agents and other stakeholders and provide advance notice of any changes that affect them.
