At a glance

  • Online shopping returns can be dropped off in any Canada Post mailbox, provided the package meets all size requirements and has a valid shipping return label with the required postage attached.
  • You can confirm drop-off and track returns through the Self Scan feature on the Canada Post mobile app or by signing up for automatic tracking
  • Larger packages should be taken to a post office instead of being dropped in a mailbox.

Package returns, made simple

Returning an online purchase can be quick and convenient. In addition to returning your purchase at the post office, you can enjoy the convenience of dropping off your online shopping returns in any Canada Post mailbox. With drop‑off available 24/7, you’re free to send your return whenever it fits your schedule.

How to return a package using a mailbox

If your return is already packaged and includes a valid shipping label with the required postage, you can drop it into a Canada Post mailbox.

Before dropping off your package

  • Ensure the return shipping label with the required postage is securely attached.
  • If you printed the label at home, make sure it is at least 10.2 cm × 15.2 cm (4 × 6 inches) and that the barcode is clear and easy to scan.
  • Ensure your package is smaller than a standard shoe box. The recommended maximum dimensions are 38 cm × 19 cm × 10 cm / 15″ × 7.5″ × 4″.
  • If your package exceeds the recommended dimensions, take it to a post office instead.

Do not force a package into the mailbox. Forcing it may cause damage or create a blockage that prevents other customers from using the box.

If the package is not properly labeled or addressed, it will be returned to you using the return address on your package.

Confirm drop-off and track your return

After dropping off your return, you can stay informed:

  • Use the Canada Post app to self-scan the barcode to receive updates.
  • Sign up for automatic tracking to receive tracking notifications for your package.

These options can help provide peace of mind and confirmation that your return is on its way back to the retailer.

Drop off before collection time

Mailboxes are generally cleared once each business day, Monday through Friday. They are not cleared on weekends or statutory holidays.

To help your return begin moving as quickly as possible, check the collection information displayed on the front of your local mailbox and drop off your package before the listed collection time.
